“1609”

Early Art development for horror/thriller film

I was pulled into this stylized period piece in the very early stages when the writer/director was still establishing what this film woulld look like. I was to provide designs for character looks, settings, and overall atmosphere for key beats.

At the time of writing this the project is holding for further developments but it has been a fun challenge to find and exaggerate the intended concept.

Characters

While still early in the process, the look for this project can be best described as “17th Century post-apocalyptic”. As time moves forward in the story the characters are meant to look more distressed, gaunt, and sickly. The outfits become more layered in tattered rags and pelts as the characters desperately survive a harsh winter.

This look is meant to pull away from historical accuracy and more toward a stylized dark thriller. By the third act the characters will be sickly with tattered clothing barely hanging on to their skeletal bodies.

Settings, Beats

Timeframe of the story is set for late autumn into a bleak winter. Trees are bare and looming with a sense of dread. Scenes will be framed in darkness with strong contrasting light, highlighting the bony looks of the desperate and dying people. More development for this look is needed as the project picks back up.
